Falkirk Pupils’ Climate Summit (COP2)

July 1, 2025

Achieving a fair and just transition to net-zero for Scotland is a local and national priority and a key feature of the Falkirk Plan. Falkirk Community Planning Partnership leads Falkirk’s contribution to Scotland’s target to be net-zero by 2045 through achievement of its aims and outcomes, and its support for community-led climate action.

A number of Falkirk Community Planning Partners were pleased to support local young people to lead the way on Falkirk’s climate change plans with their COP2 event hosted at Falkirk High School in early June. The youth-led summit saw around 100 High School students coming together for the day to review their own contributions to net zero aims, with Partner contributions, inputs and workshops helping to inform, engage and upskill local young people on climate action.

The Falkirk High School students who led on the planning and delivery of the event reflected on the day, their achievements and their aspirations for the future:

“On the 5th of June 2025, we at Falkirk High School were proud to host the second annual Falkirk Pupils’ Climate Summit (COP2). The event brought together us – pupils from schools across Falkirk Council – along with our teachers and local organisations, to take meaningful climate action. The conference reflects the goals of the Falkirk Plan, especially the commitment to creating a greener, more sustainable future through youth engagement and community collaboration.

Our day began with an opening presentation, welcoming remarks from Provost Bissett and local representatives, and a fun climate-themed quiz. After that, we took part in a wide range of interactive workshops where we explored real-world environmental issues and potential career pathways in green industries. We also had the chance to visit a variety of sustainability stalls, supported by different organisations. These stalls sparked great conversations about how we can all contribute to local climate solutions.

One of the most impactful parts of the day was the panel discussion. It was led by us, the pupils, and featured guests from Education Scotland, FEL Scotland, and local councillors. We explored how our schools and communities can work together to build a greener future, and we got the chance to ask the panel members some important questions.

In the afternoon, we split into groups to review climate action plans at the local, national, and international levels. During these sessions, we revisited the action plan created at the first summit and made some key amendments. We also had the opportunity to critique the council action plan that was created following COP1. It was empowering to have a direct say in shaping the future of our climate.

The event ended with the announcement of the Energy Challenge winners – congratulations to Larbert High (1st), Graeme High (2nd), and our very own Falkirk High (3rd) – and the signing of the updated action plan agreement.

COP2 was a huge success, but it wasn’t just a one-off. The incredible level of engagement and proactivity set a precedent across the country, inspiring other local authorities to empower their pupils and amplify our voices in similar ways. By showing what we’re capable of – and how much we care – the summit has been a milestone in integrating sustainability education into Scottish schools and curriculums.

Throughout the year, we and our fellow pupils across Falkirk Council have worked hard to create a more sustainable future. We’ve seen a growing movement take shape here in Falkirk, with more and more pupils joining school eco groups like our own Changemakers Committee. These groups are vital to the climate movement because they give us a real voice in our future, help us raise awareness, and let us build strong links with our communities.

We’d love to see even more young people get involved in their school eco groups and in their local communities. Let’s fight together for a greener future.

Change today, protect tomorrow.
Falkirk High School’s Changemakers Committee”
